There hasn't been a step in my life where expression hasn't firmly laid a hand upon my own fate. Writing is home.
I started reading novels in the form of tiny little pocket books while my family took their biannual road trip vacations. My first "adult" reads, as a youth, were J.R.R. Tolkien and Isaac Asimov, who remain my most influential authors.
I first started keeping a personal diary when I was 12 or so. My first creative project was a remake of "Hamlet", where bad jokes replaced assorted means of death. (The phrase "rapier wit" takes on new meaning, no?) By 16, I was writing political commentary and self-publishing an "underground magazine". That ended when I was recruited by the high school newspaper.
Expression gave way to life for many years. After leaving university prematurely, I worked as a travel agent, a karaoke host, a restaurant manager, a jewelry manufacturer, a saucier and a salesman (not in that order). I gained a degree of notoriety as a DJ by my stage presence and voice talent; I worked everything from weddings to strip clubs, the former I avoided, the latter being dangerously provocative.
Around the turn of the century, I returned to my love of gaming and found my first online RPG, a text-based MUD. I was captivated by the Tolkien-esque environment and the earnestness of the player's creativity and role playing skill. I wrote my first fictional account of my main character's backstory - and that landed me my first paid writing gig for the game.
During that time, I was motivated to resume keeping a journal. But it was 2003, and that was now blogging, so I started my first one on Livejournal. Then I did another on myspace. In the meantime, the story of my primary character began unfolding in my mind, and I wrote thousands of words of imagined chapters in his life.
But his life needed its own world, and in 2007 I did my first and only Nanowrimo in which that world was created. My life sometimes gets in the way, but I am still a fan of gaming, of fantasy fiction, and of storytelling. I am nothing more than an aspiring novelist at this point, but the story must be told.
I've kept blogs for years now. I've written everything from fantasy fiction to relationship advice to political commentary to erotica. At the moment, I am an unknown, and that is okay. It’s interesting to see the journey from beginning to end - for me - and perhaps it will be for you, too.
